The Bulgarian Association of Reality Therapy was founded in early 2021 as a non-profit association that develops activities related to the training, dissemination and practical application of Reality Therapy and Choice Theory.
Bulgarian Association of Reality Therapy is a representative of the European Association of Reality Therapy (EART) and the European Institute of Reality Therapy (EIRT).
Reality Therapy
Reality Therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach in which the therapist, based on the belief that people are internally motivated and in control of their own behavior, uses a process of self-assessment through which he connects with the client through the difficulties that accompany the client’s life and helps him/her to find a different perspective, find alternatives for personal satisfaction and better functioning in life. This approach of the therapist to the personality is called Choice Theory.
Choice Theory
Choice theory is a view of human behavior based on the concept of second-order cybernetics – a metaphor for the human body as a closed system. Every function in this system has a purpose and is internally motivated. The body is equated with behavior, which is an indivisible whole and consists of actions, thoughts, feelings and physiology. The goal of the human behavior is to achieve inner balance and harmonize with the environment. This is possible due to the following characteristics and capabilities of the organism: the motives that drive behavior; the ability to research and compare information gathered from the environment; opportunity to harmonize, with the help of one of its most significant human features – our own creativity. These characteristics are presented in detail for the purposes of psychotherapy through psychological needs, the quality world of a person and his overall behavior.
Representatives
William Glasser
Dr William Glasser is a world-renowned psychiatrist, founder and president of the William Glasser International Institute. He was the developer of Reality Therapy and Choice Theory. He was also notable for applying his theories to broader social issues, such as education, management, and marriage, to name a few. Glasser advocated the consideration of mental health as a public health issue.
Leon Lock
Psychologist, psychotherapist, senior instructor at William Glasser Institute, and a founder of the Training Centre for Choice Theory and Reality Therapy in Slovenia (in 1996) established the evidence that Choice Theory Psychology as well as Reality Therapy has its foundations in science and philosophy. His “Scientific Argument for Reality Therapy” was the basis of Reality Therapy recognition in Europe as scientifically grounded psychotherapeutic approach. Under his leadership EART gain full acceptance as a regular member of the European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP) by the EAP in Brussels, 2008.
Boba Lojk
Social worker, psychotherapist, senior instructor at William Glasser Institute, EART general secretary and confounder of Training Centre for Choice Theory and Reality Therapy in Slovenia that in 2009 became the European Institute for Reality Therapy (EIRT). Boba has developed original approach in teaching New Reality Therapy based on personal experiences. Along with her husband Leon she set up the five years reality therapy psychotherapist training as well as four years reality therapy counsellor training. Author of many articles and books.
Membership
The membership in the Bulgarian Association for Reality Therapy is voluntary. Those wishing to become members accept the conditions for membership in the Statute of the Association and comply with the obligations. Each member is obliged to pay his annual membership fee within 3 days after the acceptance of his Application for membership by the Board of BATR.
Student
Everyone who is enrolled in a program of the Association has the right to apply for membership with the status “Student”. It provides him/her with timely information about all the news of the Association, the trainings and the development of Reality Therapy; Discounts from BATR events, products and services.
Associate
Anyone who is interested in and involved in the cause of BATR, as well as members, after completing their training could receive the status of Associate Member. It provides him/her with timely information about all the news about the Association, the trainings, and the development of Reality Therapy; Discounts from BATR events, products and services.
Honorary Membership
Аwarded for special merits to the cause, activities and goals of the Association. Honorary members are exempt from paying membership fees.
